STAAD.Pro
by Bentley Systems
The workhorse structural analysis and design tool for industrial and infrastructure projects.
What is STAAD.Pro?
STAAD.Pro is Bentley's general-purpose structural analysis and design software, with particular strength in industrial and infrastructure work: piperacks, equipment supports, shelters, substation structures, transmission towers, water-treatment basins, and small-to-mid-sized buildings. Its pre/post-processor is tailored for beam-dominated structures typical of industrial EPC work, which is why most oil & gas, petrochem, and power EPCs use STAAD.Pro as their default.
STAAD reads and writes every major steel design code (AISC 360, IS 800, BS 5950, Eurocode 3, CSA S16) and concrete design code (ACI 318, IS 456, Eurocode 2, BS 8110). That multi-code fluency matters in EPC companies that work in multiple jurisdictions on the same project — a Gulf client may specify IBC, an Indian client IS, and a European joint-venture Eurocode.
For engineers in India, the Middle East, and South-East Asia, STAAD.Pro is often the first structural tool learned — taught in many university programs and used by the majority of local consulting firms. Internationally, STAAD is strong in industrial work while SAP2000/ETABS dominate complex buildings and bridges. Knowing STAAD is effectively mandatory for industrial structural roles.
Why engineers learn STAAD.Pro
- The dominant tool for piperacks and industrial structures — EPC hiring essential.
- Multi-code support makes it portable across regions.
- Strong Indian, Gulf, and South-East Asian EPC demand for STAAD users.
- Good entry point if CSI tools are harder to access locally.
- Integrates with Bentley's broader iTwin and OpenBuildings ecosystem.
Core capabilities
- Static, dynamic (modal, response spectrum, time history), and buckling analysis
- Steel design across AISC, IS, BS, EC, CSA
- Concrete design across ACI, IS, EC, BS
- Foundation design via STAAD Foundation Advanced
- Plate and solid finite elements for tanks, slabs, walls
- Wind and seismic load generation per multiple codes
- OpenSTAAD API for automation
Typical workflow
- Build the geometry: grids, members, plates, supports.
- Assign sections, materials, and releases.
- Apply loads: gravity, wind, seismic, piping, equipment dead and operating.
- Define load combinations per applicable code.
- Run analysis; check deflections, reactions, member forces.
- Perform code-based design; size members and print drawings and calculations.

Frequently asked questions
STAAD.Pro vs SAP2000?
STAAD is the EPC industrial workhorse; SAP2000 is the general-purpose/seismic/bridges tool. Many senior structural engineers know both.
Is STAAD easier to learn than SAP2000?
For routine industrial structures, yes — the workflow is more templated. For complex nonlinear or seismic work, SAP2000 is more capable.
Does STAAD work with Revit?
Yes, via ISM and direct Bentley-Revit integrations, though round-tripping is never perfect; most firms still treat them as loosely coupled.
Real questions, real answers
Less polished, more honest — the kind of questions engineers actually ask over coffee.
Everyone in my college class learnt STAAD. Is the market saturated?
Not at the senior end. There are millions of juniors who have "opened" STAAD; there are very few who can defend a piperack design under client review. The bottleneck is judgement, not tool access. Get yourself two years of real EPC project work and you separate from the crowd.
Should I leave my Indian EPC job for the Gulf for STAAD work?
Common move, and usually pays back inside the first contract. Just go in eyes open: STAAD work in the Gulf is faster-paced, longer hours, and tighter deadlines. The money is real but you earn it.
I keep getting lost in load combinations. Is there a trick?
Build your own template once, with every code combo you'll ever need, and reuse it. Most STAAD users reinvent this wheel every project and get it wrong. A clean reusable load combo set is the single highest-leverage thing a structural engineer can build for themselves.
Do I need to learn OpenSTAAD?
Not as a designer. As a senior who wants to stand out, yes. Five lines of OpenSTAAD that update 100 piperack models in 30 seconds is the kind of thing that gets you promoted.
